Which spelling bee words does my grade study?
Kindergarten
Most kindergarten bees use sight words rather than the Scripps list. Bee Brawl's Kinder Bee tier has the Dolch pre-primer and primer words, read aloud.
1st, 2nd and 3rd grade
One Bee, words 1–150. Third graders in a school-wide bee are often expected to know Two Bee words as well.
4th, 5th and 6th grade
Two Bee, words 151–300. Fifth graders heading to a district bee should also work through Three Bee.
7th and 8th grade
Three Bee, words 301–450, plus the words a champion needs beyond the list (the bee's later rounds go off-list).

How to study the list
1. Know your tier
Ask the teacher which tier your grade uses. Classroom bees usually go through every word on the tier in order; grade-level bees often scramble a subset. Learn the whole tier.
2. Hear it, then spell it
Spelling from audio is the real skill. Have someone read the word, or use a tool that pronounces it, and spell before you look. Cover the word, don't copy it.
3. Ten a day, review the misses
Ten new words a day finishes a tier in about three weeks. Keep a list of misses and retest them the next day and the next week.
4. Ask the pronouncer's questions
At the bee your child can ask for the definition, part of speech and language of origin. Practice asking, and practice the words with alternate spellings.
